Coastal Maine warms up gradually, and each month is its own experience.

• March: still a transition out of winter. Temperatures run from the low thirties to the mid forties. Clear, cold days suit scenic drives, photography and quiet waterfront walks. The harbor is nearly empty and the landscape still carries some winter.
• April: snow leaves most of the ground and new growth shows in the woods and gardens. Temperatures sit in the upper thirties to upper forties, with showers passing through. Birds return to the coast and streams run hard after the melt. Coastal trails come back into play.
• May: spring proper. Fifties and sixties, longer daylight, and the town comes back to life as restaurants, shops and tour operators reopen. This is the month to combine nature with a real seaside stay.

Why spring is the quietest time to visit

Summer brings thousands of people to this coast. The energy is fun, but it also means full streets and busy attractions. Spring is the opposite. You get the waterfront views to yourself, easy parking near the scenic spots and a table by the water without a wait.

Spring is shoulder season, but there is plenty to do, and more of it as the weeks pass.

The harbor is the heart of it. Walk the waterfront and the docks, watch the fishing boats and the sailboats and the small islands scattered across the bay. As the season moves on, the boat tours start running again, taking you out to the islands and the historic lighthouses. Sailing trips are best in late spring once the water settles and the days warm.

Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens is the region's headline attraction, more than 300 acres of landscaped grounds, woodland trails and waterfront. Spring is a fine time to go, with the first blooms coming in and the gardens filling with color week by week.

Spring wildlife on the Maine coast

Spring is a good season for anyone who likes to watch wildlife. Migrating seabirds return and birders come with them. Bald eagles and ospreys turn up over the harbor, and the woods fill with smaller birds. Along the rocky shore you may spot harbor seals resting on the ledges or swimming close in.

Spring weather here changes fast, so pack layers. Bring a warm jacket, comfortable walking shoes and a light raincoat for showers. Even in late May the breeze off the water cools the evenings, and a sweater or fleece will get used every day.
