Maine Lobster Season: When to Visit Boothbay Harbor

Lobster comes off these docks nearly all year. The question is which weeks give you the sweetest shell, the fullest harbor and the shortest lines.

When is Maine lobster season?

Every guest who checks in eventually asks whether they timed Maine lobster season right. The honest answer is that lobster is on this coast nearly year round. Boats haul in every season. But two windows matter to a visitor, and Boothbay Harbor sits in the middle of one of the busiest lobstering stretches on the Atlantic coast.

The main season runs from late June into early December. As the water warms, lobsters move closer to shore, the catch goes up and the waterfront hits full stride. A quieter second season runs December through February, when the shells have fully hardened. Town slows down then, but the lobster is excellent if you like firmer meat and a higher yield.

If you are planning a trip around the plate, late June to mid-October is the window.

Soft-shell vs hard-shell lobster

This is the detail that catches first-time visitors, and knowing it makes the meal better.

In summer lobsters molt. For a few weeks after, the new shell is soft and pliable. That is a soft-shell lobster, a summer thing almost exclusively. The meat is sweeter and more tender, and the shell cracks by hand without tools. A lot of longtime Maine visitors will tell you it is the best eating the coast offers.

Hard-shell lobsters, more common in late fall and winter, have grown into their shells and carry more meat per pound. They ship well, which is why they dominate the export market. Both are good. It depends on what you value.

At Boothbay Lobster Wharf, right on the working harbor, you can choose soft or hard at the counter. Small thing. It matters if you have done the reading.

Why Boothbay Harbor beats other lobster towns

Plenty of Maine towns serve lobster. What we have here is the chance to watch your dinner arrive.

This is still a working harbor. Boats go out before dawn and come back through the day, unloading at the same docks where visitors eat and walk and board tour boats. Sitting at an outdoor table while a lobsterman unloads crates fifty feet away is not staged. It is how the harbor operates, and it gives the meal a context no dining room can manufacture.

Lobster events worth planning around

A few recurring events turn a lobster trip into something richer. The Charles Begin Memorial Lobster Boat Races run in June, with working boats racing in the harbor while spectators watch from the water or from the Department of Marine Resources point on McKown Point Road. The race circuit continues up the coast through August, and the awards banquet is typically held in late September at Robinson's Wharf.

Windjammer Days brings tall ships and live music to the harbor in late June. In September the Boothbay Harbor Tuna Challenge draws serious anglers and curious spectators to the docks alongside the lobster fleet. None of these were built for tourists. They are the rhythm of a working town.

Where to eat lobster in Boothbay Harbor

Boothbay Lobster Wharf on Atlantic Avenue is the most direct experience. A working dock where you pick your own lobster, order at the counter and eat outside on the water while the afternoon catch comes in.

McSeagull's has a covered waterfront deck and a traditional sit-down lobster dinner, steamed with potatoes and corn, plus bisque and rolls if you want variety.

Robinson's Wharf has been a local institution for more than four decades, with waterfront dining, live music on summer weekends and a year-round seafood market for taking something home.

For a dressier evening, the Boathouse Bistro turns local ingredients into baked stuffed tails, lobster risotto and surf and turf.

Best weeks for a lobster-focused visit

Among guests who come back every year, there is a quiet consensus. Late July through early September is peak soft-shell, with the biggest supply and the harbor fully alive. Windjammer Days in late June is a good opening act.

If you want the same quality with thinner crowds, aim for the last two weeks of September or the first week of October. The Fall Foliage Festival at the Railway Village Museum falls in that stretch, and restaurants put out their most thoughtful seasonal menus.

The midcoast season generally runs from May through mid-October. After that, most lodging and many restaurants close for winter, so plan inside that window if you want the full harbor.

Where to stay for lobster season in Boothbay Harbor

The best lobster meal in Maine still feels incomplete if the rest of the day does not match. Where you sleep matters most at dawn, when the boats leave and most visitors are still asleep.

Our inns sit on Commercial Street within walking distance of the docks and the restaurants. No parking, no drive across town before coffee. Greenleaf Inn has ten king rooms and a third-floor sky deck that looks over the harbor; Admiral's Quarters next door has a glass solarium and a harbor lawn with a fire pit. We know the fishing schedule, and we will tell you when to be on the water.

  • Walkable access to the working waterfront
  • Rooms that feel like Maine rather than a chain
  • Innkeepers who know when the boats go out
  • Quiet mornings that make an early harbor walk inviting
  • Common spaces to plan the day over breakfast
