Color moves across Maine over roughly five weeks. It starts in Aroostook County and the northern woods in late September and works south and east toward the coast. The midcoast, where we sit, usually reaches peak from early to mid October, and the coastal stretches often hold good color into the back half of the month.
That later window works in your favor. If you missed the mountains, you still have a strong shot at full color along the harbor. It also means we avoid the worst of the early-October crush.
Early turn versus full blaze
This is the detail that catches first-time fall visitors. In late September and the first week of October the harbor shows what we call early turn. Scattered maples and birches go red and gold while most of the tree line is still green. It is a quieter kind of beautiful, and rooms are easier to get.
By the second and third weeks of October the hillsides around the harbor, the drive down Route 27, and the water itself carry the full spectrum of orange and red and yellow. That is the postcard version.

One weekend in October is worth circling. The Fall Foliage Festival at Boothbay Railway Village Museum fills the museum's village green with local artists and makers, live music, steam train rides through the color, and the kind of fall food only a small-town fair does well.
It lands squarely in the midcoast peak window, which makes that weekend the busiest and, for a lot of people, the most rewarding of the season. Rooms in town go early. If you want a quieter trip, the final two weeks of October keep the color along the coast with a noticeably slower pace once the festival crowds head home.
How to spend a fall day in Boothbay Harbor
Fall here rewards unhurried mornings more than packed schedules. Start on the footbridge early, when mist still sits on the water and the shoreline maples catch first light. That alone is a reason to come.
From there the working waterfront gives you plenty to watch without a plan. Boats coming and going. The shops on Commercial Street settling into fall hours. Harbor views that shift by the week. The Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, just outside town, runs fall programming through much of October and pairs well with a foliage trip.
