April in Boothbay Harbor: Open Mic, Art Walk, Spring Fling and Earth Day
April is when the town wakes up, and it packs a surprising amount into a few weeks. Boothbay Harbor festivals start here, before the summer crowds, and most of them are free.
Open Mic Night at the Opera House usually kicks things off in early April. The Opera House is a nineteenth-century hall with good acoustics, and the night mixes folk, jazz, spoken word and comedy from local performers of every skill level. It is free and open to everyone. Restaurants nearby stay open late afterward.
The Farmers Market gets going in early spring too, with produce from the surrounding farms, local honey, handmade jewelry and crafts. Go early and talk to the vendors. It is the fastest way to learn what is good in town that week.
The Boothbay Harbor Art Walk lands in mid-April. More than twenty galleries, studios and art shops open their doors from noon onward, and you walk between them, meeting the painters, photographers and sculptors whose work you are looking at. Live music and food trucks fill the streets between stops.
Spring Fling is a full weekend later in the month. Participating shops run their best deals of the year, and the town adds live music, food trucks, art shows, pop-up markets and open houses at local landmarks. If you want the shopping side of Boothbay Harbor without the summer crowds, this is the weekend.
Earth Day on April 22 brings the Earth Day Festival: workshops on composting and recycling, talks from local environmental groups, a green market with organic food and handmade goods, and a community cleanup along the shore with native tree plantings. It is a family day and a good one.

Summer in Boothbay Harbor: First Friday Art Tours and theater nights
July is the busiest month of the year and the calendar shows it. First Friday Art Tours open the month, and galleries and studios run classes and workshops through the summer if you would rather make something than look at it.
Evenings are the draw. The Carousel Music Theater does dinner shows that pair a meal with a live performance. The Opera House and the Waldo Theatre host summer concerts. The Harbor Theater runs the summer movies. Between them you can fill every night of a week without repeating yourself.

September: the Pemaquid Oyster Festival
The Pemaquid Oyster Festival takes a weekend in late September, and oyster people plan their year around it. Freshly shucked Maine oysters are the point, with other seafood and dishes from local chefs alongside. Live music runs all weekend, craft and artisan booths line the grounds, and there is plenty for kids.
September is also when the summer crowds thin out and the town is at its easiest. Pair the festival with a boat day and you have one of the better weekends of the year.
October: the Fall Foliage Festival and Halloween
The Fall Foliage Festival is held on a weekend in mid-October at the Boothbay Railway Village Museum, and it has been running for more than fifty years. Craft vendors sell handmade goods, which makes it a smart early stop for holiday shopping. Fall food stalls, live music and entertainment run all weekend.
While you are there, see the museum's antique car collection and the model railroad, and say hello to the village goats, who are a bigger hit than the cars with most kids. Admission is a small per-person fee and young children get in free.
Halloween on October 31 gets its own set of events. Ghost tours run in the evening and the town leans into the season with family-friendly events downtown. The harbor in late October, with crisp air and the last of the color, is worth the trip on its own.
Fall color usually peaks around the festival, so if foliage is what you came for, mid-October is the week.
How to plan a festival weekend in Boothbay Harbor
Book the room before you book anything else. Festival weekends sell out downtown, and the inns are small: ten rooms at Greenleaf Inn, eight at Admiral's Quarters Inn. Both are on Commercial Street, so you can leave the car parked and walk to everything in town.
Check the Chamber of Commerce calendar for exact dates each year. Most of these events keep the same month and roughly the same weekend, but the day shifts, and a few change venues.
For the April events, Greenleaf's king rooms with balconies put you within a walk of every gallery on the Art Walk. For the Fall Foliage Festival, plan on driving. The Railway Village is a short drive from Commercial Street.
